Cruise West

Our Legacy of Exploration
Cruise West founder Chuck West established his first tour service in Fairbanks in 1946. He went on to pioneer nearly every element of today's Alaska travel scene. Chuck West's wife and lifetime companion, Marguerite, has links with Alaska that go back a century. Her parents owned gold dredges in Nome - and she herself was Miss Alaska in 1937.

Up-Close, Casual & Personal
When the West family, the founders and still owners of Cruise West, began offering unique and personal travel experiences more than 50 years ago in Alaska, a philosophy prevailed that remains true to this day: to provide up-close travel that focuses on the destination - its scenery, wildlife, natural history and culture - all in the company of limited numbers of like-minded travelers.

While magnificent sweeping views are certainly abundant in every one of Cruise West's destinations, it's the glory of the details, viewed close up, that provides the most rewarding memories - an eagle in a tree on a tiny rocky islet, or the barnacles visible on a humpback's fin. In many of the remote waterways we visit, small ships are the only way to explore the area.

The casual style on board all of our vessels encourages relaxation and congenial interaction between guests and crew alike. And the experience is personally enriching, through on-board narrative and lectures, special local guests from a wide variety of backgrounds, and the library provided on each vessel.

With Cruise West, you're not just a visitor, you're a participant. Whether kayaking off a wilderness island in Mexico, hiking in a rain forest in Alaska, or enjoying a spectacular spring garden in British Columbia, a small-ship cruise is an engaging experience for all the senses. In every Cruise West destination, at least one shore excursion or highlight is included in each port of call, to further encourage your active involvement.

Exploring Alaska with Cruise West

Cruise West offers many options for discovering the final frontier of Alaska up- close. Travelers explore Alaska’s coastal splendor, from dramatic glaciers to hidden fjords. They can retrace a famous expedition, or visit quaint fishing villages.

Their small ships navigate narrow channels and shallow bays out of reach of larger ships, while travelers hear glaciers groan and crack, feel the mist of a waterfall or watch seals sunning on rocks. And the laid-back nature of the cruises often leads to friendships among the like-minded travelers drawn to the wilderness of Alaska.
