The area around Anadarko, located 55 mi/90 km southwest of Oklahoma City, was once a hunting ground for the Comanche, Kiowa and Wichita people. Today, the Apache, Caddo and Delaware are also represented in the area, making Anadarko a rich source of Native American history, artifacts, artwork and crafts.
Each August the weeklong American Indian Exposition takes place, with ceremonial-dance contests, powwows, arts-and-crafts exhibits, greyhound and horse races and the crowning of the National War Dance champion and the Outstanding Indian of the Year.
Also in town is the National Hall of Fame for Famous American Indians and the Southern Plains Indian Museum and Crafts Center (stop by the gift shop, which sells items from the Oklahoma Indian Arts and Crafts Cooperative). You should also take a look at the murals by Kiowa Indian artists that decorate the town's post office.
