Sihanoukville

Overview

Introduction

Also known as Kompong Som (the communist name), Sihanoukville (its royalist name), Cambodia, is a port city built in the 1950s, located 100 mi/160 km southwest of Phnom Penh. The city is still an important port and has become a stop for many Southeast Asian cruise ships. Sihanoukville owes its popularity primarily to the beaches in the area. Accommodations there run the gamut from budget or midrange to large luxury hotels, and more are under construction. Offshore there are several small islands worth seeing, and some offer overnight accommodations. A day trip can be made to Kbal Chhay Waterfall, and overnight trips can be made to the small town of Kampot.
