Founded by the Romans and one of the oldest settlements in Germany, Speyer is situated along the banks of the Rhine River in southwest Germany, an hour's drive from Frankfurt.
It is a beautifully historic town that is dominated by its most important landmark—an 11th-century imperial cathedral. Speyer Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most significant, and largest, examples of Romanesque architecture in all of Europe. Additionally, it contains the tombs of eight Holy Roman Emperors and German kings, as well as several bishops.
Alternative attractions to Speyer Cathedral include well-preserved traditional Jewish ritual baths, called mikew, and the Technik Museum, which has a collection of airplanes, cars, locomotives and submarines.
Speyer is not connected to the high-speed ICE train network, but the train station, located in the northwest of the old town, has connections to Mannheim, Karlsruhe and other German towns. The city also runs a public bus system.
