Located 100 mi/160 km northeast of Durban, South Africa, Richards Bay began as a makeshift harbor set up in 1879 by a Commodore of the Cape, Sir Frederick Richards, during the Anglo-Boer War.
Today it's a modern town and the largest industrial port in South Africa. Apart from a few good beaches and a well-designed urban center surrounding a series of canals and a lagoon, there is not too much to attract visitors. But it is the gateway to some wonderful game reserves in northern KwaZulu-Natal such as Hluhluwe-Imfolozi and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park).
