Overview

Introduction

Taiwan's second-largest port lies at the northern end of the North-South Expressway (Route 1). Historically, Keelung has been a commercial, military and fishing harbor, but the area's most important function was acting as a protective zone around the whole Taipei area after the Nationalists settled there in 1949. Today, Keelung is probably not worth a special trip, although it is famed for its fresh seafood at the night market in front of the temple gates. 25 mi/40 km east of Taipei.
