For something very different, make a trip to Komodo Island to see the fascinating Komodo dragons, giant carnivorous monitor lizards that grow up to 18 ft/5.5 m long. This impressive, mountainous island (peaks rise more than 2,000 ft/610 m) also has a wide variety of interesting birds and sea life.
Komodo doesn't have an airport, but ferry service from Sumbawa and Flores is available daily. Two- or three-day tours can also be arranged from Bali.
