Beaune

Beaune

Overview

Introduction

About 30 minutes south of Dijon is the charming town of Beaune, located in the heart of the Cote d'Or, the wine-making region of Burgundy. Its location makes Beaune one of the key wine centers in France. This is evident in many of its landmarks, including the Hospices de Beaune (now home to the primary wine auction in France), the wine museum, and a great variety of wine shops and bars.

The town itself is far from limited to wine: You will also find that Beaune offers quite a bit of scenery, including Roman ruins throughout; be sure to visit the former ramparts walls around the old town. Wander the old town to take in the architecture, but also for a touch of shopping around the central square.

If you plan to visit the wine region, which you should, be sure to book your visits at your wineries of choice in the morning or the day before your visit, or risk being disappointed when you arrive. Beaune is located on the Route des Grands Crus, which is a wine trail through the surrounding region, making it easy to access any winery you choose to visit.
