Utrecht

Utrecht

Overview

Introduction

Located 30 mi/50 km southeast of Amsterdam, Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. It's known for its churches, and if you walk along the Wittevrouwensingel, the city's main street, or the Oudegracht (old canal), you're certain to hear church bells tolling.

In the town center is Dom Toren, a 367-ft-/112-m-tall cathedral tower. Guided tours to the top are available. We were mesmerized by the Museum Van Speelklok tot Pierement, which exhibits automated musical instruments. We also enjoyed the railway museum, aptly located at Maliebaan Station. (If you're departing Utrecht by train, arrive at the station early and tour the museum.)
