Rijeka

Rijeka

Overview

Introduction

Rijeka, Croatia, is the country's busiest port, so it may be necessary to pass through the city at least once (road, rail and ferry routes converge there). Most of the big coastal car ferries serving Dubrovnik, Hvar Island, Korcula, Rab Island, Split and Zadar originate in Rijeka, which lies 115 mi/180 km southwest of Zagreb.

If you find yourself in the city for more than a moment, check out the Maritime and Historical Museum, located in the former Governor's Palace, and visit the Church of the Assumption, with its interesting adjoining and leaning bell tower.

Also worth noting is the locally made jewelry called morcic, which is a specialty of the city. The jewelry (earrings, tie pins and broaches) is made in the shape of a small black figure wearing a turban and is said to bring luck to its wearers. http://www.visitrijeka.eu.
