St Paul de Vence

St Paul de Vence

Overview

Introduction

One of the best inland spots in the French Riviera region is St. Paul de Vence, a little town about 10 mi/15 km northeast of Cannes.

Its setting, along with its reputation for attracting the rich and famous, makes it a wonderful place to have a meal or to browse its many art galleries.

Just outside of town is Maeght Foundation, a gallery with sculptures by Miro and Giacometti, colored glass windows by Braque, and mosaics by Chagall. It was created in 1964 by art collectors Aime and Marguerite Maeght, and its collection of 20th-century works is one of the largest in Europe. https://www.fondation-maeght.com.

Nearby, in the town of Vence, is the Chapelle du Rosaire, a small church whose interior, windows and bell tower were designed by Henri Matisse. The artist spent almost four years of exclusive attention working on the church and called it his masterpiece.
