The international airport in Incheon has replaced the older Gimpo airport, so this city may be your first taste of Korea. A major seaport 16 mi/26 km west of Seoul, the city is noted for its fine seafood restaurants and fish markets. Usually seen as a half-day trip from Seoul, the trip can be lengthened to a full day by including a visit to Ganghwa Island, north of Incheon. The island contains the Jeondeungsa Temple, fields of ginseng, the Samnang Fortress, a number of dolmen (prehistoric, megalithic stone tombs), Chamseongdan Altar, island fortifications, royal tombs and temples.
Incheon is a familiar name to many because it was where Gen. Douglas MacArthur and U.N. troops landed to outflank the invading North Korean troops in 1950.
