Once a bustling Danish port on St. Croix, Christiansted's careful preservation of its ornate 18th-century buildings has made it a popular stop for visitors interested in more than a beach vacation. About six blocks of the town is a National Historic site. The best way to explore the area is on foot.
The small island that you can see in Christiansted Harbor is Protestant Cay, and the building atop it is Hotel on the Cay, whose good beach and cozy restaurant and bar are open to the public. A ferry transports passengers from the park service dock for a small fee.
Christiansted holds "Jump Up" celebrations about four times a year, when stilt walkers entertain crowds, bands play at various locations around the town and shops stay open into the night. There's usually a Jump Up just before the Thanksgiving holiday, Valentine's Day and the biggest triathlon of the year. Another Jump Up street festival takes place during the summer.
