Monemvasia

Monemvasia

Overview

Introduction

Monemvasia is located 99 mi/160 km south of Athens and is one of the most picturesque places in Greece. The old town is actually a fortress town, a perfectly preserved medieval settlement, albeit one inhabited by modern people. Vehicles are not allowed there and the atmosphere is magical, transferring visitors to another era. A bridge you can walk along connects the new town with the old one, a small islet linked to the mainland.

Visit the church of Elkomenos Christos and the Archaeological Collection housed at the 16th century former mosque. The upper old town offers a splendid panoramic view, but is now restricted because of archaeological excavations.
