Many people pass through the spotless city of Bologna, Italy, on their way elsewhere, which is a shame—it merits a stop of at least a day.
Sometimes called "Bologna the fat," this city 65 mi/105 km north of Florence is a great place to indulge yourself: Many consider it the gastronomic capital of Italy.
A few miles/kilometers northwest of Bologna is the town of Modena, which has an impressive 28-ft/88-m Ghirlandina bell tower. Modena was also the home of tenor Luciano Pavarotti as well as the Ferrari and Maserati auto companies.
