Familiar to U.S. and Canadian veterans of World War II as the Crossroads of the World, Gander is still a major aviation center for trans-Atlantic flights stopping off in Newfoundland and Labrador. There's an aviation museum at the airport, 120 mi/195 km northwest of St. John's, as well as the famous mural Flight and Its Allegories.
The Festival of Flight (a celebration of Gander's aviation history, with dances, sporting events and a folk festival) is held every August.
