Most people only pass through Bangor, Wales, crossing its landmark suspension bridge (built by Thomas Telford in 1826) on their way to the Isle of Anglesey. That's a shame, really, because this town, 192 mi/309 km northwest of Cardiff, has a number of attractions, including a university, a museum and an 11th-century cathedral. The extravagant Penrhyn Castle, built in neo-Norman style on the edge of town, was actually built in the 1820s and looks more like a mansion.
