Addo Elephant Natl Park

Proclaimed in 1931 in an effort to save the last 16 elephants in the area, Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa, has grown into a 444,700-acre/180,000-hectare reserve, home to more than 550 elephants and an array of other wildlife and birdlife. There, the Big Five becomes the Big Seven because of the southern right whale and great white shark that can be sighted off the coast of the Woody Cape Section of the park. Other rare sightings include the black rhino and flightless dung beetle.

Horse trails are a must, although game drives and walks are always rewarding. Addo is 45 mi/72 km from Port Elizabeth.
