IntroductionOfficially founded in 1776, Guatemala City, Guatemala, is the capital of the country and the largest city in Central America. It has a crowded and noisy old section—where almost all of the colonial-era architectural and historic sites are found—that is almost impossible to drive through, but the other side of the city is modern and dynamic, with shopping malls, luxury hotels and convention and financial centers. As with most large cities in the developing world, it has sprawling shantytowns.
