OverviewIntroductionIn 1783, Amarapura, Myanmar, was the capital of Burma, with a population of 200,000. Today, around 35,000 people (mainly cotton and silk weavers) live in the city 7 mi/10 km south of Mandalay. Sights in Amarapura (the "City of Immortality") include the palace ruins, several pagodas and U Bein's Bridge (a 200-year-old, 0.6-mi-/1-km-long wooden footbridge with a nice pagoda on the other side). Just after sunrise, hundreds of villagers and monks cross the rickety bridge as part of their daily commute.
