IntroductionThe main settlement is relatively small and has few tourist attractions. From there, it's possible to walk around the island in less than a day. However, we suggest you take a taxi to the Topside to see the phosphate fields—it is too hot and dusty to walk up there. The haunting coral pinnacles left by strip mining cover much of the interior of the island and are worth a look. There's a beach on Anibare Bay, but the strong currents make it very dangerous to swim there. Two big Japanese guns and numerous bunkers and pillboxes remain from World War II. A walk around the machinery dump is another way to kill time.
