Located in the Sredna Gora mountains about 70 mi/115 km east of Sofia, Koprivshtitsa is a symbol of Bulgarian national independence. This pretty village is preserved as an open-air museum in honor of the revolution that led to war between Turkey and Russia and, ultimately, Bulgarian independence.
Old stone and wood houses line narrow cobblestoned streets. Six homes once occupied by the most famous revolutionaries are now museums and show visitors what living conditions were like more than a century ago. Note, however, that some buildings are closed on either Monday or Tuesday.
Below Koprivshtitsa is the scenic Topolnitza River; above it lie verdant hills. Plan half a day in Koprivshtitsa en route from Sofia to Plovdiv.
