OverviewIntroductionAlthough Astypalaia belongs to the Dodecanese islands, its proximity to the Cycladic Islands explains the heavy influence the Cycladic architecture has exercised here. It is often called "butterfly" because of its shape and it is located 170 mi/280 km southeast of Athens near Amorgos. The island is mostly untouristy and has one of the most beautiful towns among the Greek islands (Chora). Visit the numerous churches of the island (the most fascinating is Panagia Portaitissa, built in the 18th century), and don’t miss the Byzantine castle of Agios Ioannis, which offers a stunning view. In Astypalaia you will find an infant cemetery dating from the Geometric Age—the only one worldwide. Enjoy swimming at the crystal clear waters of the beaches: Tzanakia, Plakes, Pera Yialos, Kaminakia.
