Don't be surprised if you hear the battle cry of "War Eagle" as you enter Auburn, located 60 mi/70 km east of Montgomery. Home to Auburn University and the Auburn Tigers, this town boasts plenty of activities, even when football season is over.
The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts has eight exhibit galleries (phone 334-844-1484; http://jcsm.auburn.edu). Auburn University's Jonathan B. Lovelace Athletic Museum & Hall of Honor depicts the role sports has played in the university throughout the years, but it is closed until 2010, when it relocates to a new basketball arena.
Chewacla State Park (700 acres/285 hectares) offers a lake, tennis facilities, picnic area and campground. And for a closer look into the area's history, visit the Museum of East Alabama in nearby Opelika.
