Most people go to Schauffhausen, Switzerland, a small city near the border with Germany, to see Rheinfall, the biggest waterfall in Europe (think wide and mighty, not tall and graceful). The city itself, which is 31 mi/52 km north of Zurich, has a nice Old Town with well-preserved houses that display cantilevered bay windows and painted facades.
The 16th-century medieval fortress, Munot, is perched on a hill high above the Old Town. Kloster Allerheiligen, once a Benedictine monastery, has a lovely herb garden and an interesting museum.
