Dusseldorf, Germany, is a handsome, modern city 25 mi/40 km northwest of Cologne along the Rhine River.
The dynamic state capital of North Rhine–Westphalia is the eternal rival of Cologne, but Dusseldorf holds its own as one of Germany's fashion capitals—several major fashion trade shows are hosted there—and an important center for financing.
Dusseldorf is one of Germany's richest cities. Most of its historic buildings were destroyed in World War II, but the old riverside quarter has been rebuilt.
Among the city's attractions are first-rate museums, luxurious shopping malls, fine restaurants and a roaring nightlife. The city can be seen on foot in one long day.
