IntroductionThis city (its name means "radiant"), with a population of more than 1 million, is the second-holiest city of Islam (Muhammad is buried there). Only Muslims can visit it. There are several mosques, including the Mosque of the Prophet (green dome—contains Muhammad's tomb), the Qiblatayn Mosque (it was there Muhammad decreed that prayer should be directed toward Mecca, rather than Jerusalem) and the tomb of the Prophet's daughter Fatima (although she's actually buried across the street). 200 mi/320 km north of Jeddah.
