Monemvasia

Overview

Introduction

Monemvasia is located 99 mi/160 km south of Athens and is one of the most picturesque places in Greece. The old town is actually a fortress town, a perfectly preserved medieval settlement, albeit one inhabited by modern people. Vehicles are not allowed there and the atmosphere is magical, the visitor feels as if he is transferred to another era. A bridge you can walk along connects the new town with the old one, a small islet linked to the mainland.

Visit the church of Elkomenos Christos and the Archaeological Collection housed at the 16th century former mosque. The upper old town offers a splendid panoramic view, but is now restricted because of archaeological excavations.
