Located about 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego, La Jolla (pronounced la HOY-yah) draws surfers and sun-enthusiasts with its mansion-lined beaches .
La Jolla claims Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and actor Gregory Peck as famous former residents and boasts prestigious scientific research institutes such as Salk and Scripps.
You can explore the Torrey Pines State Reserve, catch a gust off the Torrey Pines Gliderport, marvel at the Birch Aquarium, attend a show at the La Jolla Playhouse or the Old Globe, see an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego or visit the expansive campus of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
La Jolla cove is popular with divers and snorkelers, since the water is calm and the area is ecologically protected. On the other extreme, Windansea Beach is rocky and tumultuous. Only experienced surfers brave its waters, but the small beach draws photographers for its dramatic sunsets. North of Scripps Pier is Black's Beach, known for its rough cliffs and its clothing optional reputation.
Galleries, restaurants and boutique stores line Prospect Street and Girard Avenue in La Jolla Village.
