Most people associate Colorado with mountains more than sand dunes, but Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest dunes in North America, towering nearly 750 ft/230 m above the valley floor. They cover approximately 40 sq mi/105 sq km.
The best way to experience the dunes is to run, jump, roll and slide on them. And photographers take note—the sun and shadows on the dunes make it a fascinating place to photograph. One word of caution: The sand heats up under the sun. Wear shoes to protect your feet.
The Great Sand Dunes are located 130 mi/210 km south of Denver, near Alamosa. https://www.nps.gov/grsa/index.htm.
