About 15 mi/25 km north of Niagara Falls, the Niagara Parkway reaches the charming town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, located at the mouth of the river on Lake Ontario.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is steeped in history and was the location of Canada's first capital prior to 1867, when Ottawa became the capital. These days, tree-lined streets depict this cluster of early Canadian homes, many of them with lavish gardens and white picket fences. British traditions remain strong: You'll find high tea afternoon at such historic establishments as the Prince of Wales Hotel. Horse and buggy rides take you along Queen Street through the quiet residential areas and past some of the prestigious hotels near the waterfront.

This quaint town draws large crowds for its cultural addition to the nature-intensive area. Also, its location on the mouth of the river makes it a popular destination for newlyweds as well as budding photographers.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has an extensive variety of bed-and-breakfasts and luxury inns.
