Aukstaitija National Park

Overview

Introduction

The beautiful, undulating green and forested landscape of Aukstaitija National Park is 62 mi/100 km northeast of Vilnius and easily accessible from the capital. The name means "uplands," and the land is dotted with glittering blue lakes and rivers created by the last ice age.

The park is very popular with canoeists and hikers. You may come across roe deer, red deer, wild boar and even elks. The only blight is the nuclear power plant of Ignalina, but this otherwise nice town with pastel-colored wooden houses also offers accommodation and even has a modest center for winter sports.

Be sure to see the commanding view of six lakes from Ladakalnis hill 6 mi/9 km northwest of Paluse, where sacrifices took place in pagan times. http://www.anp.lt.
