Port Chalmers is the main port for the city of Dunedin, because the channel to access Otago Harbor is too narrow for many large ships. The Octagon is a local landmark that is the heart of the city and many of the city's attractions are within easy walking distance. Buses to additional locations usually leave from the Octagon, or it is possible to catch a train at the central station to travel even farther away.
The small township of Port Chalmers is easily explored on foot, with a number of interesting galleries, boutiques and shops. Many of these are located in historic buildings that offer a glimpse of olden Otago. Visit the Maritime Museum to learn more about the area's pioneering history along with its early seafarers and settlers.
