IntroductionThe walled city of Jajce (pronounced YITE-sa) was where the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was founded in 1943. Worth seeing today are the narrow cobblestoned streets, a well-preserved castle (with catacombs underneath) and the interesting Temple of Mithra (dating from Roman times). Nearby are the Pliva Lakes, which include old wooden water mills. 106 mi/170 km by road northwest of Sarajevo.
