A small, colorful town on the southern coast of Portugal, Portimao offers visitors access to sunny beaches and wonderful, fresh seafood. The town center is a contemporary mixture of centuries old, low-slung buildings intermixed with high rises adorned in pastel colors. Shops and bars are crowded around the town center, and visitors would be remiss to not try one of the many excellent seafood restaurants.
Located slightly outside of town, Praia de Rocha is the most popular beach in the area. Buses to Praia de Rocha leave every 15-20 minutes from the bus station on Avenida Guanare.
Portimao is also known for its sporting events, most notably the Mundialito de Futbol de Praia (the Little World Cup), which is a beach soccer tournament held in the summer, and for prestigious sailing events, including the Portugal Match Cup.
To learn about the vital role in the local culture and economy played by the fishing and sardine canning industry, visit the Portimao Museum, housed inside a former canning factory.
