Azraq, which means "blue" in Arabic, features a nature reserve that includes several pools, marshland that is seasonally flooded and a large mudflat, making it very popular with migratory birds. You can get information and book tours at the visitors center, and limited accommodations are available at a lodge and several bungalows. About 6 mi/10 km south of Azraq is the Shaumari Reserve, a breeding center for endangered or locally extinct wildlife. It boasts some of the rarest animal species in the Middle East, including oryx, ostriches, gazelles and onagers. There is also a visitors center and museum, a small zoo and an observation tower. Azraq is 68 mi/110 km east of Amman.
