Malacca City is the capital of Malacca, the third smallest Malaysian state. The city, along with George Town of Penang, became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Malacca has spent periods of time under alternating Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, and the city's rich historical heritage is evident in its unique architecture and culture.
Malacca lies on both sides of the Malacca River, and the city has grown out from the historic center consisting of the Dutch Square and St. Paul's Hill on the eastern bank of the river, and Chinatown on the western bank.
Many shops and business are closed on Tuesday in Malacca.
