Mexican markets are renowned for their vibrant, bustling, atmosphere, boasting bountiful produce and prepared foods alike both familiar and nearly impossible to find outside of Mexico. Longstanding cornerstones of local food and shopping culture, the Mexican market is a must-see when visiting Mexico City. During this 3-hour Mexico City Food Tour, led by a local chef or food writer, we'll dive inside the Mexican market as we feast both our eyes and stomachs, developing a deeper appreciation for the wide range of textures, colors, and flavors present in Mexican cuisine. Our Mexico City food tour will begin at Mercado Jamaica, one of our favorite markets in the city. Established in the 1950s, the market has a rich history linking to its location and base on the canal pathway. Our docent will kick off things by talking about its varied past along with the importance of the market space and place for Mexican people. Following a look around the surroundings, we will dive into the market to talk about—and sample—the great number of foods on offer, from tlacoyos (tasty snacks filled with fava bean or cheese) to huitlacoche (corn fungus—delicious, trust us) to tamarind-covered mango candy. What makes El Mercado Jamaica that bit more fabulous is its abundance of flower related goods. It’s the wholesale flower market for Mexico City: we'll see anything from lilies to roses to hydrangeas. A handful of the stands even stay open for 24-hours due to Mexico’s burial customs but when we visit the market will be flourishing with activity. Our docent will talk about the significance of local festivals, celebrations and funeral rites, all of which play hand in hand to the floral theme at the market. Our docent will facilitate discussions with local vendors who have served the culinary needs of Mexico City for decades and enjoy sharing their story. We will also discuss the changing face of neighborhood markets in Mexico City, which goes along with changing shopping habits of locals and the redevelopment of historic markets. Along the way, we will sample a range of Mexican produce to experience the diversity and quality of the market. We will examine how all of these products fit into the Mexican diet and other culinary traditions and philosophies. At the end of the walk, we will have gained a better understanding of the crucial role these markets play in shaping local identity, while leaving with a fuller belly and florally-feasted eyes.
