Wine cruises are an ideal way to explore the world while learning from and engaging with wine hosts who live, breathe, and love wine. AmaWaterways' hand-selected Wine Hosts are a mix of North America's sommeliers, winery owners, and professional winemakers. While on the ship, the Wine Hosts lead seminars, wine-pairing dinners, and tasting events that uncork the culture and history of the world's wine regions.
"At AmaWaterways, we are committed to offering a robust lineup of wine-themed itineraries because we understand that the guest experience is about much more than the accommodations and the destinations," says Kristin Karst, Executive Vice President and Co-Owner of AmaWaterways.
Plat Du Jour
Next year, AmaWaterways will host 64 Wine Cruises—the highest number to date—and introduce new itineraries including the seven-day Medieval Treasures sailing along the Rhine and Main rivers between Basel, Switzerland and Nuremberg, Germany. Itinerary highlights include a stop in Strasbourg, France, where guests are invited to sip the wines of Alsace, the region responsible for the oldest wine in the world, dating back to 1472. In Rüdesheim, Germany, a gondola ride to Niederwald Monument affords views of the vineyards below and a taste of Riesling. Finally, back on board the AmaDante, passengers can continue their adventure with a wine-paired dinner in the Main Dining Room or The Chef's Table.
A La Carte
At the helm of AmaWaterways' culinary program is a team of chefs, like AmaLea’s Executive Chef Daniel Tanase. Chef Daniel began his career at Mon Plaisir—London's oldest French restaurant—before joining AmaWaterways in 2013. AmaWaterways' onboard kitchens are equipped with just one freezer and no microwaves ensuring the culinary team is buying fresh and minimizing waste. Everything from Chef Daniel's demi-glace to his consommés are made from scratch, and each dish is curated to accommodate guest requests.
In 1994, the Rice family opened Sunstone Vineyards & Winery in California's Santa Ynez Valley, where Bion Rice found his passion for blending wines. Under the tutelage of Daniel Gehrs, Bion also created his own wine label, Artiste, in 2002. Keeping it a family-owned business, he named two wines after his children Miles and Mason, who help with the harvest: "Milestone" and "Mason Cuvee." His wife, Anna, leads the creative efforts for both Sunstone and Artiste. Join Bion as he shares his passion for organic viticulture and wines while hosting a Melodies of the Danube Wine Cruise sailing March 22-29, 2019 aboard the AmaSonata.

The spirit of the season shines just as brightly on board the AmaWaterways fleet with its festive ambiance, Christmas cookies, gingerbread-making demonstrations, and a guest favorite – a traditional European holiday dinner paired with a selection of regional wines chosen for the occasion.
