Canadian Discoveries

There have been many great Canadian inventors. Dr. Frederick Banting’s groundbreaking research led to the discovery of insulin in 1921. Joseph-Armand Bombardier invented the snowmobile in 1922. Winnipeg native Dr. John A. Hopps invented the first heart pacemaker in 1951 in a National Research Council lab in Ottawa. The programming language Java was invented by James Gosling of Calgary when he was working at Sun Microsystems in 1994. In 1999, Mike Lazaridis at Research in Motion invented the original BlackBerry, a pocket-sized digital organizer.
